Inflammation Panel Testing at TEKlaB Laboratory
Inflammation is your body's response to infection, injury, or disease. Inflammatory markers help diagnose infections, autoimmune conditions, and monitor chronic inflammatory diseases.
Key Inflammatory Markers
CRP (C-Reactive Protein)
Most commonly used marker - rises quickly with inflammation or infection
ESR (Sedimentation Rate)
How fast red blood cells settle - elevated in inflammation
Procalcitonin
Helps distinguish bacterial from viral infections - guides antibiotic use
Fibrinogen
Clotting protein that rises during inflammation
When to Get an Inflammation Panel?
- Suspected infection - Fever, chills, unexplained symptoms
- Autoimmune disease diagnosis - Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease
- Monitoring chronic disease - Track disease activity in known inflammatory conditions
- Unexplained symptoms - Fatigue, joint pain, weight loss
- Post-surgery monitoring - Detect infections after surgical procedures
- Cardiovascular risk - High-sensitivity CRP predicts heart disease risk
- Cancer screening support - Some cancers cause chronic inflammation
What is Inflammation?
Acute inflammation:
- Short-term response to injury or infection
- Symptoms: redness, heat, swelling, pain
- Usually resolves when cause is treated
Chronic inflammation:
- Long-lasting, persistent inflammation
- Can damage healthy tissues over time
- Linked to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer's
- Often no obvious symptoms
Preparation for Inflammation Tests
- No fasting required for most inflammatory markers
- Continue regular medications unless told otherwise
- Inform lab if you have fever or recent infection
- Best to test before starting antibiotics (if possible)
- For monitoring chronic disease, test at consistent times
Understanding Your Results
| Test | Normal Range | Elevated Indicates |
|---|---|---|
| CRP | <10 mg/L | Infection, inflammation, tissue damage |
| hs-CRP (cardiac) | <3 mg/L | >3 mg/L = high cardiovascular risk |
| ESR | <20 mm/h (men) <30 mm/h (women) | Inflammation, infection, autoimmune disease |
| Procalcitonin | <0.05 ng/mL | 0.5-2: bacterial infection likely >2: severe sepsis |
| Fibrinogen | 200-400 mg/dL | Inflammation, clotting disorders |
CRP vs. High-Sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP)
Regular CRP
- Detects significant inflammation
- Used for infections, autoimmune diseases
- Range: typically 0-100+ mg/L
- Very high in acute infections
High-Sensitivity CRP
- Detects low-level chronic inflammation
- Predicts cardiovascular disease risk
- Range: 0-10 mg/L
- <1 = low risk, 1-3 = moderate, >3 = high risk
Conditions That Cause Elevated Inflammatory Markers
Infections
- Bacterial infections (pneumonia, UTI, sepsis)
- Viral infections (COVID-19, flu)
- Tuberculosis (common in Morocco)
- Parasitic infections
Autoimmune Diseases
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Lupus (SLE)
- Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's, UC)
- Vasculitis
Other Conditions
- Heart attack, stroke
- Cancer
- Tissue injury or trauma
- Chronic kidney disease
Chronic Inflammation
- Obesity
- Diabetes
- Metabolic syndrome
- Chronic stress
Procalcitonin: The Antibiotic Decision Maker
Procalcitonin is especially useful in Morocco's context of antibiotic overuse:
- <0.05 ng/mL: Bacterial infection very unlikely - no antibiotics needed
- 0.05-0.5 ng/mL: Bacterial infection possible - clinical judgment
- 0.5-2 ng/mL: Bacterial infection likely - antibiotics recommended
- >2 ng/mL: Severe bacterial infection/sepsis - urgent antibiotics
This helps prevent unnecessary antibiotic use for viral infections, reducing antibiotic resistance.
Why Inflammation Testing Matters in Morocco
- High TB prevalence - ESR and CRP help screen and monitor tuberculosis
- Antibiotic overuse - Procalcitonin guides appropriate antibiotic use
- Rising autoimmune diseases - Better diagnosis and monitoring
- Cardiovascular risk - hs-CRP helps identify high-risk patients
- Post-surgical infections - Early detection prevents complications
